January 2011-- New Designs, New Ideas

My mom and I have had ideas rolling around in our heads for years. This year we have finally decided to make them happen. Mom doesn't do much on a technical side, but she has all the artistic skills that I'll never have so we're a good balance for each other :) We have decided to collaborate and launch our first in a series of new designs. Each month we will launch a new design. Sometimes they will be embroidery, sometimes quilting (emphasis on applique), some cross-stitch, etc. Sometimes we might even get ambitious and put out more than one project in a month! (As I type this my mother says "yeah, right!) All designs will be available for the month they are launched as a free download, and available for purchase after that.

Anyway, we decided to launch our January project as something that can be used in February. This first design is for the center of a wall hanging. We will launch the embroidery design first, and we will reveal our pieced version on January 15th. On February 1, the pattern will be available for purchase, and will include the embroidery pattern, as well as the templates for completing the design in applique.

I hope you will enjoy what we have in store for you! Every month will be different, so you never know what you might fall in love with!

January's project is an embroidery project. Mom has always been a fantastic artist (we have had a few of them in the family tree). She designed this Valentine's Day princess ready for a Sweetheart Ball. Since my birthday is in February she decided to name her "Jennifer". (Awwww) You can download the pattern at the link below

January

Here is a closeup view of her ballgown:

Here is an up close view of her face. Everything is stitched using a stem stitch, with French Knots in the highlight of the eyes, and nose. The rest of the eye is done using a stem stitch outline and fill-in.

Here is a closeup view of her purse, which was done using a lazy daisy chain stitch.

"Jennifer" is available for download for free until January 31, 2011, and available for purchase as a double pattern for applique and embroidery February 1, 2011 for 15.95 for download. Shipping charges will apply if you prefer a paper pattern.

Miss Kaity's got a brand new bag!

While visiting family for Thanksgiving, I took one of my machines with me, intending on making a purse for my sister-in-law, who has been waiting patiently for quite some time. I also took along with me a variety of patterns for her to look over and see if something appealed to her. As we were going through them, my 3 year old neice pulled Ellen Medlock's Out & About Tote pattern from the stack and informed me that she needed a new bag, and it needed to be pink on the outside, green on the inside.

With my order in hand, her mom and I set out to find her some fabrics the evening before Thanksgiving. We found these cute prints at Walmart of all places, and I picked up some trim and buttons to give it a little bit of pizazz. Thanksgiving evening I started cutting out her bag while we had some down time and she was out of the house visiting other relatives (We did our Thanksgiving on Saturday)and by the time they came home that night her bag was done! I modified the pattern slightly, making the bag deeper, handles longer, changing the interior pocket sizes, and attaching the handles between the exterior and interior fabrics. Here is the end result, and little Miss Kaitlyn proudly showed off her bag to everyone around :)

2011 BOM

Ok, so thanks to one of my wonderful friends on facebook, I'm no longer an Electric Quilt failure. I've finally been able to wrap my brain around how it works, and churned out a few new designs. With my confidence boosted, I'm going to put in some of the designs I've sketched out into EQ and finally get them worked up into patterns.

My goal is to launch a BOM in 2011. My question is, what kind would people really like to see? Please check out my facebook bage Little Ladybug's Creations and add to the discussion what you would be most interested in.

Trinity Valley Quilt Show 2010

We stopped by the quilt show a couple of weeks ago and I never got around to uploading the pics I was able to take. It seemed to be a smaller show than in years past, but they always have some real talent on display. Here's a few photos of the ones I liked the best. Enjoy!

Garage sale find!

This past weekend was garage sale central in my neighborhood. Ash and I got up early and hit several. We only made it to half a dozen before I found my treasure for the day. This is a solid cedar Lane Hope chest. There is one leg that needs to be stabilized, and the "faux" hardware on the front is non-functional, but one is broken. I see a project with a much happier (and prettier) outcome than sitting in someone's garage...any idea what I paid for this gem??

A whopping 20 bucks! Lets see what I can turn it into. Stay tuned!

Patriotic Purse

I made a new purse for one of my fellow Air Force wives. This is a heavily modified version of the Bow Tucks pattern by Quilts Illustrated. I increased the height and width, narrowed the depth, changed the pocket width and height, widened the straps, and made them longer, widened the ties on the sides, and custom sized all the interior pockets to fit her specific items (cell phone, ipod, etc). I also removed one layer of the batting to make it lighter weight. The quilting is straight diagonal lines across the body of the bag, and freemotion "America" on the front pocket.

When God Closes a Door...

As many of you know, I've been working full time outside the home for the last 2 1/2 years. While its nice to have extra money, I hated the time away from my family, and even more, I hated that I was always tired.

This week I joined the ranks of the unemployed, losing my job suddenly. While a small panic set in of whether or not we could afford only one income, it was overshadowed by a huge weight being lifted off my shoulders. I have felt very strongly for quite some time that I needed to be home. It is what I felt God called me to do, and I felt that i was short changing my husband and my kids because I wasn't happy and I wasn't able to take care of them in the way I know God commands.

It also meant that I could hopefully take on more orders and get them completed in a much quicker time frame instead of just trying to steal away an hour here and there. I have so many ideas in my head, now I might just have the opportunity to put them into realization. Designing and creating are my passion (among a half a dozen other things) and I'm hoping this is the opportunity to realize some of my dreams.

I am lucky that I have a husband who supports my chaotic and crazy love for crafts (even though I know he doesn't understand it...) and he (for the most part) just goes along with my ideas and will often make dinner, do dishes, or laundry, chase kids or whatever needs to be done so I can be alone in my sewing room. I am truly blessed to have him!

So...I am on a mission. I have to get my house in order that I have neglected for pretty much the last year and a half, and finish doing the stuff I never got around to doing while he was deployed, and see if I can put my marketing skills to work getting this creative endeavor of mine off the ground in a meaningful way.

I would love to hear some feedback and some ideas from those of you out there who are familiar with my work or what people would like to see aside from me just taking orders and sewing for people. What other crafts would you like to see? What tutorials? Do you want fabrics? Do you want designs? Do you want kits? Do you want patterns? I would also really really really like to do some collaborations with some of you, so please hit me up if you would be interested.

Life changes...happy and sad.

I said I would be better about updating things and I guess its like Murphy's Law. You make a pledge to yourself to do something and Murphy says "Oh I don't think so!" *sigh*

No sooner did I post that last message when I got the word that a dear dear friend of mine was in the hospital again.

For some background--I grew up on the stage. Literally. From the time I was barely old enough to talk, I've been singing, dancing, and performing. I had the amazing opportunity to grow up in an organization called Oklahoma Kids. Every weekend we travelled the state doing shows, competitions, benefits, whatever. I performed all the time and I loved every minute of it. I met so many people from all over the state who became a second family to me. These are people who were like me. We loved each other like brothers and sisters, and their parents became like our own. We competed against each other, but it was always friendly and we were genuinely happy for others when they beat us, and they were happy for us when we had the opportunity to win. It taught us all so many positive life lessons. We became gracious losers and humble winners. We learned teamwork. We learned respect. We learned compassion. We learned to accept change and how to improvise. We learned how to take care of ourselves and each other, and how to be confident. It was a different childhood from most, and i wouldn't trade it for the world.

This was my life from about age 8 until I was out on my own. In 1985 I met Darrell at an Oklahoma Kids event. I remember like it was yesterday. He was a couple of years older than I am, and relatively quiet and shy...until we got to know each other. Darrell never had a bad attitude, always a smile and a joke. He was one heck of a dancer. He was my first dance partner. Darrell and I did tap and jazz together, and when we were in the OK Kids road show, we were often paired together. As a partner goes, there was none better. He was always cautious of the girls he danced with, and their safety was always his concern. Darrell took great care of all of us girls on stage, and off. He was like a big brother, and nobody had better mess with us. Thats just how he was. Everyone has people that they dislike in life, and nobody can please everyone all the time, but Darrell was different. He got along with everyone, and nobody ever got angry or disliked him.

Darrell was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 17. That began a string of hospital stays constantly over the years. He learned to manage the disease himself, but often would take care of others at his own risk. He never thought about what he needed until others around him were taken care of. When Darrell got married and had a son, his whole world became taking care of Aldren. He lived for that boy.

About 2 years ago Darrell started going into renal failure. He began rigorous rounds of dialysis and landed on a transplant list needing a kidney and pancreas. If he had needed just a kidney, there were dozens of us Oklahoma Kids lined up ready to donate for him. Unfortunately, what he needed couldn't be donated by a living donor. He continued to decline in health, but his spirit had never changed. No matter how sick he was, he always had a smile and encouraging words for you.

It was about that time that I was in OKC to see him and his mom for the day and Darrell and I took a drive. He took me down to the memorial from the Oklahoma City bombing. I hadn't been there since a couple of days after it happened, so I had not seen the memorial. We walked around it and took it all in, all the while having a pretty deep conversation. Darrell and I talked about faith and spirituality. I knew he was unhappy in his marriage, and I had just been through a hellacious divorce, and had found happiness with my husband. I longed to share that with him, and he was so happy for me. I remember him telling me that I deserved to finally find someone to treat me right. I remember him telling me he wished he could have more kids. He didn't want Aldren to grow up without having brothers or sisters. He missed dancing. He didn't think he'd be able to see his son grow up without that transplant and that worried him. Darrell was a believer in Christ, though, so while he was concerned for what he might leave behind. I don't think he was afraid of dying.

Fast forward to July. Darrell had divorced his wife and was finding happiness again. He had just moved back in with his mom and was helping her out. He was having a really rough time of things health-wise though. For weeks he wasn't sleeping, having trouble breathing, feeling sick, etc. One morning Debby found Darrell unconscious on the floor and he was rushed to the hospital. His blood sugar was over 1700...which was as high as the meter went. For 3 weeks he was in ICU on a ventilator and relatively unresponsive, though I did get him to squeeze my hand a few times, and he DEFINITELY hated when the nurses came in to brush his teeth. We tried everything under the sun to get him to wake up. He was hanging on for something but we had no idea what that was. We just wanted him to wake up.

He was moved to a long term care facility after a few weeks, but nothing seemed to work. He was slipping away from us. For those who knew Darrell, his nickname was "Flash". That was because Darrell was NEVER in a hurry or rush for anything...and I mean anything. We just figured in typical Darrell fashion he was taking his own sweet time to make his way from this earth to Heaven. It was finally decided that they would remove him from machines and let him peacefully pass. Even then what we anticipated to take a few hours took nearly 2 days. It was only after his mom came into his room to tell him that arrangements had been made and his son would be taken care of that he finally let go, less than 5 minutes later.

As we all grew up and went our separate ways, the last year or so we had all been pushing to get together for a reunion of all of us OK Kids who had grown up with such a unique bond. Darrell got his wish as most of us were reunited for his memorial service last weekend. While it was a celebration of a life lived to the fullest, it was a sad time, as we said goodbye to a unique spirit that would be forever in our hearts. Many of us had not seen each other in close to 20 years or more, and it was like we had seen each other last week. We talked, reminisced, laughed, and cried (Thanks alot Tim). Darrell brought out the best in so many of us, both as people and as performers. He taught and inspired us all. We love him, and his family, and we are so proud of his little boy, who is a carbon copy of Darrell in so many ways.

Darrell, I miss you, and I love you dearly. We will dance again in Heaven...

Updates

It has been awhile since I posted anything new. Unfortunately life has just gotten in the way of most of my sewing time lately. When I get a new camera or at least one that works better than what I have I will get photos updated, as I have several new items to showcase, but I'm not able to get any decent pictures!

New to the lineup will be a Marine Diaper Bag. Similar in style to the ABU one I designed, this will resemble a Marine Desert MARPAT uniform blouse. I also have some new purse designs in the works. If only I could produce items as fast as I can think them up.

I'm toying with the idea of offering my designs with a pattern and fabric as a kit and you can sew them yourself. I'll welcome any ideas or suggestions on that!

Newest Addition to the nursery lineup!

This is part of an order I'm finishing up for a customer but it turned out really cute so I had to post a picture or two! This is an original design diaper stacker. Made with Air Force ABU fabric and navy piping, I stitched the AF Wings logo into the top panel because I thought it needed a little "somethin'". I am pretty pleased with the overall look. Now that I have a machine that gives me a little more flexibility in design I will probably modify this slightly before drafting up a pattern but nothing too noticeably different. These will be available for all 4 branches.

Behind on orders...Family comes first

I just wanted to take a moment to let you all know that I am currently about 2 weeks behind on orders. I had the flu for about a week which meant I didn't touch my machine (I didn't feel the need to send my flu virus home to my customers on their fabrics) and we are dealing with the unexpected diagnosis of my father-in-law's illness which brought my husband and 2 of my brother-in-law's home from their deployments early to be with their dad. We are on a day-by-day basis right now, and it is only a matter of time before his body completely shuts down so we are trying to come to terms with this all at once. This came completely out of the blue so we have all been shocked to see him go from being fine to nearly totally incapacitated within just 2 weeks time.

I will resume shipping orders within the next 2 weeks but wanted to update everyone on what has been going on around here. While I'm thrilled to have my husband back home early, I wish it was under different circumstances.

Thank you all for your kind words, emails, prayers, and help during this time. We appreciate it more than you can possibly know. God is good, though, and while we don't know his plan, we know it is all in His hands.

Finally, I have a "design"

Cori at Scrap-e-blogs did a fabulous job taking my blog to a whole new level. I'm still working on the last few tweeks but doesn't it look amazing?! Please feel free to grab my button and link. If you notice anything odd or not working right please let me know so I can get it fixed ASAP.

Cori also did a makeover for our family blog (which I have been horrible about updating). Check it out here

She has tons of free templates and stuff on her blog, and she's quick and affordable for custom work. For more of her talent, go check her out on her own site

Thank you Cori!
